Travel Nursing has been an eye opening experience since day one! With every contract and new location, I am taken out of my comfort zone and constantly adapting to a new way of life. Each state and city has been unique in its own way and being able to immerse myself in different lifestyles has been eyeopening. Nevada is no different!
Living in an area prone to wildfires for the last 11 weeks has been one of those eyeopening experiences. Year after year, I have heard of the devastation that the west coast wildfires cause, but had no idea the impact it has on those who live here. Communities are evacuated, residents fear losing all that they have… I can not imagine how hard this is for them and living in a world where this is their norm and their reality.
This week, the heavy and toxic smoke from nearby wildfires had settled back in the valley, engulfing Reno’s skyline. I was forced to change my plans for my last free weekend here in NV. After looking at the air quality reports of the surrounding cities, Virginia City was our best option for outdoor activity.
Virginia City is another historic small town on the southeastern border of Reno. Founded during the mining boom of the mid-1800s, it is home to the first major silver deposit discovered in the United States.
The city streets still hold historic charm and it is not hard to picture them as they were 150 years ago!

My favorite discovery was the old Firehouse Museum! With fires being a prominent part of life here, the museum houses the “survival” of this city.
Hand pump Fire Engines! Such a special piece of history has survived all these years!
Next week, I am back on call and finishing this contract out strong!
If the smoke makes its grand exit, I have plans to not waste a moment of the fresh air! Keep following along on this amazing Travel Nurse adventure as I knock out these last 2 weeks in Reno, Nevada!
