On Thursday, June 11th, on my way home from town, I saw a tiny kitten walking in the middle of the TX-21. I quickly pulled over and scooped him up. He was bleeding from his eyes, nose, and mouth pretty heavily… it was not looking good for him. I didn’t initially take him home but it didn’t take long for me to decide to try to save this little kitten.

He was feisty when I first grabbed him off the road, but quickly went limp. Over the next 24 hours, it was touch and go. I honestly didn’t think he would make it through the night. I gave him honey drops to his gums to help increase his blood sugar, attempted to give him Pedialyte but he was incredibly lethargic and not really responding. He couldn’t hold his head up, his eyes were crusted closed, and the bleeding from his nose and mouth had slowed but was still present. I was essentially providing comfort care and prepping my heart for a kitten funeral in the morning. At 2am, a little squeak came from his little box and by 5am, a full kitten cry woke us up and was the first sign that he was going to be ok.

He still refused water but quickly responded to kitten paste food that next morning and was able to eat small portions between sleeping. After he started responding more, I was able to clean him up and give him a good look for injuries. His little face/lower jaw was completely smashed. He had a couple teeth knocked sideways, a big scuff under his nose and eye and a pretty good gash on his belly on the inside of his back leg. All injuries looked “ok”… even the “snaggleteeth”… as long as he was able to eat and the cuts and abrasion scabbed up, I figured he would be ok. The bigger issue I was concerned about was his “cross eyed” condition. I immediately knew that with the type of “smash” trauma to his face and the cross-eyed issue, he had sustained a concussion and that also explained the excessive sleepiness! Over the next couple days, his eyes corrected themselves and other than the facial injuries, you wouldn’t have known anything had happened.

On Sunday, it was time for us to head out on our RV adventure. Little kitten, I was calling him Kevin at the time, was doing well but still sleeping the majority of the day. We decided he was so chill, we would just take him with us. A little RV adventure kitten… We then changed his name to Pippin because he became our little adventure buddy and Pippin the Pip-squeak stuck.

Today marks Pippins 1 week anniversary with us and he is now a full blown kitten. He is either sleeping or 1000% hyper active OR 1million% STARVING according to him!

His little snaggletooth makes meal time super messy!! Food gets caught on that little tooth and a little post meal face cleaning is needed. He also likes to remind us that his bowl is empty if he can fit in it… which is the end of the world in his eyes!

But after meal time, it’s all about adventure time! He LOVES to be outside hopping around catching crickets and chasing frogs. He is learning to tolerate the harness and leash and has joined us on every hike so far since we have been here.

Little Pippin is doing great! He is potty trained and prefers to go outside to do his business, he is eating us out of house and home, he is joyful and snuggly all while having a snaggletooth. This little one went from end of life comfort care to the perfect adventure buddy in 7 days! We are still planning to find little Pippin a forever home but with every day that goes by, we will definitely have a harder time saying goodbye.
Adorable. I guess Watson is ok with the little intruder.
He is tolerating him… but is loving eating little Pippins leftovers
