My Husband and I have a system when hitching and unhitching our rig. I am at the wheel of ToVi while he is doing everything else! With the amount of teamwork required to make a smooth hitching/unhitching process, ability to communicate to each other easily is essential!
We have witnessed people who simply try to yell over the noise of the truck engine and we have seen people use their cellphones to communicate with their teammate, but we also heard about people have walkie-talkies. The walkie-talkies, we thought, gave us the guarantee of always being able to talk to each other during what can be a very stressful process. Cell phones are fragile and don’t hold up when dropped, don’t always have service, don’t always have a charge, and my husband’s phone is NOT waterproof! We have hitched and unhitched in the rain more than once!
We opted for the Midland X-tra Talk 2-way radios with 24 mile range. These radios have been used with every travel day! With the loud and clear speaker, easy function, excellent battery life, water resistants and durable build we have not be disappointed. We have also used them in an unconventional way! There have been multiple trips where we needed to take 2 vehicles due to my working situation. When we ride in separate vehicles, we leave the walkies on! It is so much easier to talk to each other with the walkies rather than having to call each other on the cell phone! Having the walkies on and ready, I can relay messages about needing a rest stop, gas stop, or GPS route changes.
We also use them when setting up site! I am in charge of the inside set up of the rig, and my husband handles the outside. He has his system of the order that he connects all the drains, water and electrical! To ensure that I don’t jump ahead of him, he will let me know via the walkie when the electric is connected, when it is safe to open the slide, and when I can run water. I run through my routine of set up along side his exterior set up and everything is smooth and simple. This is also how we work on breakdown days! He guides me on his progress on the exterior and I mimic on the interior.
We charge them when we remember if we are just spot using them or that evening if we left them on all day. No issues in the 2 years we have owned them!
